Interns and Students |

LWOB offers unpaid internships to law and undergraduate students on a tri-semester basis: Winter/Spring, Summer and Fall.
Applications are currently being accepted for Fall 2010 and Spring 2011.
Applications are generally due and will be reviewed at least 3 months before the start of the new internship term. All internships are unpaid, and our interns typically live in the region or within a one-hour commute of our offices. As a general rule, LWOB engages 7-10 interns per semester and 10 or more in summer. Otherwise qualified summer intern applicants who can volunteer for the entire summer (10 or more weeks, uninterrupted) will be preferred.
Interns are required to
-
speak and write fluent English,
-
have a commitment and drive to make a difference in the pro bono legal or human rights sectors
-
work well in a team environment.
-
during school term, commit to a minimum two full days per week and a minimum of six (6) uninterrupted weeks in summer
-
be prepared to work on tasks that range from mundane administrative tasks to challenging research.*
* Law Students please note, we do not guarantee that you will have opportunities to do legal research during your internship--although we will make an effort to provide at least one meaningful legal research task for you if the opportunity arises.
We discourage students who have no connection to the Hartford area from applying for internships at Hartford headquarters. Housing and transport are not ideal and the region can present challenges to those who have no social support mechanisms in the area.
We sometimes have opportunities for internship seats hosted by law firms in major metropolitan areas and do have opportunities for internships (self-funded) in such places as London, Nairobi and Monrovia. No internship application will be considered without a detailed CV/Resume and cover letter. Applications (Cover Letter and CV) should be submitted in writing to internships@lwob.org
Intern Applicants must indicate in your cover letter 1) Proposed start and finish dates
2) Proposed work schedule
3) For Summer Applicants: whether you are interested in interning for entire summer (Summer Applicants) and those dates.
4) Acknowledge that you realize
-
that the commitment is for a minimum of 6-10 continuous uninterrupted weeks (Summer Applicants should plan their vacations before or after the internship)
-
that the internship is unpaid and there will be no compensation for any associated costs you incur
-
that you understand that a major part of your internship may be performing administrative tasks associated with LWOB rule of law programming
LWOB currently (Fall 2010) has vacancies for full time internships for between 6-12 months. Interested post-graduates (BA or Law) should send a CV and letter followed up by a phone call to schedule an interview.
